Ashbourne Drive to Develop Girls Rugby

After advertising for girls or woman to play rugby in the local area, Ashbourne RFC have successfully started up a girls development team. Ashbourne had a successful Woman’s team for many years but it ceased 5 years ago.

Up to 20 girls from the local schools through work done by club CCRO Scott Broughton, the girls have been going through their paces under the watchful eyes of Scott and Louise Kavanagh former Woman’s Captain at Ashbourne.

The girls have shown great enthusiasm and dedication on some wet and wintry training nights and are enjoying learning new aspects of the game.

On last Saturday afternoon Ashbournes new girls team played their first game against our neighbours Navan, who have also just started a team as well. Ashbourne girls won the game 6 tries to 3, but what was more important for both clubs was to see them take the field. Well done and we look forward to seeing this section grow from strength to strength. The panel has been together now for 5 weeks under the watchful eye of Ashbourne coaches Scottie Broughton and Louise Kavanagh.

The club is hoping to grow the panel and continue to develop this group of players. They showed a lot of skill and ability in a game that they have only been playing for a few weeks.

Ashbourne had a very successful Woman’s team for many years but it has been lapsed for about 5 years. The club hopes that this is the start of a new beginning for woman’s rugby at the club, which is the current home of the Ireland Woman’s team
